About

About

During the pandemic, I observed that many of my classmates had significant difficulties applying for part-time jobs. This inspired me to redesign the Indeed app, which had an overly complicated job application process. After one month, I improved its System Usability Scale (SUS)—an industry-standard tool for measuring usability—from 'below average' to 'above average.

Once I felt I had a clear path to follow, I started making mid-fidelity designs and drafts in Figma.

After this, I began to make a prototype to test with users. For this, I began to make the flow that we wanted to improve in this app: a happy path for the application process.

To test my first prototype, I conducted a remote usability test with three users who were actively searching for part-time jobs. The goal was to determine if the new prototype was more usable than the original app. The test included two core components:

  • A Think Aloud Protocol script.

  • Two SUS questionnaires in Google Forms (one for the original app and one for the new prototype)."

It was a one-on-one test with the following steps:

  1. Each participant downloaded the original app and attempted to apply for a job.

  2. They completed the SUS questionnaire for the original app in Google Forms.

  3. Each participant then used the prototype built in Figma to apply for a job.

  4. They completed the SUS questionnaire for the new prototype in Google Forms.

  5. I analyzed the SUS results and user impressions from the Think Aloud questionnaire.

Overall, users commented that the new prototype felt cleaner and easier to use compared to the original app. Additionally, they expressed a desire for features such as details about the work environment, filters for remote/hybrid/in-person jobs, application follow-ups and notifications. Some of these features were included in the final iteration of the prototype.

Final Design

After my mentor’s feedback and my user interviews’ analysis, I came up with the final design. You can visit the entire Figma file by clicking here.

I also did a UI Kit to maintain the visual consistency:

Love at first sight

This was my very first UX project and the beginning of my journey to becoming a UX/UI designer. I fell in love with the idea of solving real problems through design to create products that are enjoyable to use.

The why is important

I knew I wanted to redesign the Indeed app, but I never asked myself why I was redesigning it. This made the early stages of the process overwhelming and confusing. Thanks to my mentors, I realized that my goal was to make the application process easier for users.
